Peponi Hotel is an intimate boutique retreat on the remote island of Lamu, located in the Indian Ocean off Kenya’s northern coast. The hotel’s story begins in the 1960s with the Korschen family, who stumbled upon the old building by chance. Aage ‘Lemmy’ and Wera Korschen had been farmers in upcountry Kenya until their land was acquired during the country’s independence. Having made Kenya home for themselves and their three children — Lars, Hanne, and Nils — the family explored different career paths but found little success.
As their plans to leave Kenya for Argentina took shape, Aage felt compelled to visit a part of the coast that had long captured his imagination: the Lamu Archipelago. This fateful visit led to the discovery of the property that would become Peponi Hotel, marking the beginning of its unique story and its transformation into one of Lamu’s most cherished boutique escapes.
